Field Gear & Equipment

Bergens, tents, sleeping bags, ammo cans and mess tins — the kit that makes surplus so popular with campers, bushcrafters and preppers, not just collectors. Built to survive far worse than a wet weekend, and usually a fraction of the price of civilian outdoor brands.

2.3 — Field notes

Before you buy

  • Ammo cans and mess tins are usually sold as issued, with dents, paint wear and stampings intact. That's part of the charm, but check the photos if you want a clean one.
  • Sleeping bags and tents vary hugely between issue generations. Check the era and the season rating before trusting one in winter.
  • The NSN on a label tells you what an item really is — 8465 is individual equipment, 8340 is tents. Check one with the NSN Lookup.
  • Surplus ration packs are sold for novelty and prepping. Check the date and only eat them within it.
